Course Description

The course consists of five units. 

  • In unit 1, students will answer the essential question “How can we slow the flow of energy on Earth to protect vulnerable coastal communities?”. Students will study Thermodynamics in Earth's Systems through the effects of sea level change. 
  • In unit 2, students will answer the essential question “What causes lightning and why are some places safer than others when it strikes?” Students will study the structure and properties of matter through the phenomenon of lighting strikes. 
  • In unit 3, students will answer the essential question “How can we find, make, and recycle the substances we need to live on and beyond Earth?”. Students will study molecular processes in Earth systems. 
  • In unit 4, students will answer the essential question “Why are oysters dying, and how can we use chemistry to protect them?” Students will study the chemical reactions in our world. 
  • In unit 5, students will answer the essential question “How can chemistry help us evaluate fuels and transportation options to benefit the Earth and our communities?” Students will study the energy from chemical and nuclear reactions.
