Course Description

This module supports the concepts taught in ILC ELA 5: Module 3 Athlete Leaders of Social Change. In this Module, students will explore the following concepts: Fluency/Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics (GUM): Students will set fluency goals and work on their reading fluency to support deeper comprehension of grade-level texts. Students will also practice verb tenses, using prepositions, and other grammar concepts. Additional Work with Complex Text: Students will identify and analyze key terms and concepts in the main text Promises to Keep: How Jackie Robinson Changed America by Sharon Robinson. Word Work and Vocabulary: Students will study Latin and Greek prefixes, root words, and suffixes to help them identify and understand unfamiliar grade-level words. Students will also work with 5th grade academic and domain-specific vocabulary. Writing Practice: Students will write one opinion paragraph or essay, and two informational paragraphs or essays. Students will also work with citing information from the text, or their life, to provide evidence of their thinking. Independent Reading: Students will read a variety of self-selected research texts that connect to the main text and a variety of free choice texts. They will also write about their reading and discuss their reading with peers. Independent Writing: Students will practice writing fictional narratives based on a picture, using prompts if needed. Students will also give feedback to their peers on their fictional writing. Note: The ALL Bock module is an integral part of the program to ensure all standards are addressed; therefore, it should be downloaded with the corresponding content module.
