Course Description

This is module 1 of 4 modules. The sequence of modules is available in the Read Me First Materials in each unit. This module supports the concepts taught in ILC ELA 5: Module 1: Stories of Human Rights and serves as an essential introduction to the technology and skills students practice with the other ALL Block modules. In Unit 1, students will pick two texts for independent reading. One text will be anything the student would like to read, and the other will be a research text on the subject of Human Rights. Students will construct responses to discussion prompts on topics related to Human Rights. Students will read Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoze Ryan and discuss how a character’s response to a challenge builds the theme of a story. Students will build vocabulary skills by analyzing academic and domain specific vocabulary words. In Unit 2, students will work on accuracy, fluency, and self-correction in oral reading. Students will build vocabulary by choosing their own words from their independent readings. Students will strengthen writing and reading skills by responding to a reading prompt from their independent reading. In Unit 3, students will work with figurative language and identify how it is used to build meaning in a novel. Students will use evidence from their independent reading to construct a supported response to a reading prompt. Students will work with metaphors to compare the reactions of two characters in a text. Students will evaluate their fluency skills to determine their strengths. Note: The ALL Bock module is an integral part of the program to ensure all standards are addressed; therefore, it should be downloaded with the corresponding content module.
