Course Description
We begin with the territorial expansion of the United States beyond the Mississippi River, and then proceed to investigate the Civil War and Reconstruction. Next, we move on to the Iowa Constitution, the three branches of state government, and the evolution of civil rights in Iowa. Finally, students wrap up the semester by completing an inquiry-based project. The course uses Iowa’s Academic Standards to develop the content knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in this course.

Curriculum leaders and teachers should review these instructional materials to ensure full implementation of Iowa’s Academic Standards in the local curriculum. Each module identifies standards that are addressed and assessed, and this course creates a year-long curriculum when combined with ILC 8th Grade Social Studies - Semester 1.
