Course Description

This course introduces students to the early history of the United States. Students will: Examine the challenges associated with European settlement of North America. Investigate the establishment of the British colonies in what became the United States. Learn about the American Revolution and then wrap up the semester. Study the foundations of American government and politics and our civic institutions. The course uses Iowa’s Academic Standards to develop the content knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in this course.

Curriculum leaders and teachers should review these instructional materials to ensure full implementation of Iowa’s Academic Standards in the local curriculum. Each module identifies standards that are addressed and assessed, and this course creates a year-long curriculum when combined with ILC 8th Grade Social Studies - Semester 2.
