ILC 5th Grade Social Studies: Right to Vote Unit
This is unit 2 of 5 units. The sequence of units is available in the Read Me First Materials in each unit. In this unit, students answer the compelling question “What opportunities does the right to vote provide?”. Students will discover how African Americans, women, and Native Americans obtained the right to vote. Students will begin by reviewing the importance of voting, and then engage in a brief review of the Civil Rights Movement. They will then dive into important amendments and federal acts that ensured voting rights for all United States citizens. Students will create quality questions to guide our inquiry, and analyze the credibility of primary and secondary sources to find evidence from many perspectives about the right to vote. Students will discover the struggles, the strategies used, and eventually the success of each group in gaining the right to vote.
