Course Description
This is unit 1 of 4 units. The sequence of units is available in the Read Me First Materials in each unit. In second grade, students will learn about choices and consequences. They will engage in thinking and conversing about their own responsibility to take care of their community, focusing on cooperation and citizenship. They will also learn how the government plays a role in establishing and maintaining local community spaces. In this unit, students learn about Buxton, Iowa. By analyzing historical images and documents, students explore the town and history of Buxton. Buxton existed only for about 20 years but boasted a population of African-American former sharecroppers and Swedish immigrants who enjoyed economic prosperity and societal integration in this unique Iowa town during the early 1900s.
